Stood up for private property rights and video-recorded a cop.

For their performance in "The Candia Horse Caper" as seen on the Ridley Report, wherein our heroes, Cooper and Beth, stopped the SPCA agent deputy known locally as "Steve" from coming on the property, and also stopped the police reinforcement, and wherein Cooper ended up being taken for a ride by the Blue Light Gang.

Reported Heidi Travis to the SPCA and govt.

Beth did not like Heidi as a boss (Heidi hired Beth to help manage the horses and ranch; Beth lived on Heidi's property) and thought Heidi mistreated her horses, so she reported it to the SPCA and involved the govt in the form of cops. This is a hotly debated issue, which you can read about here.

Walked around downtown Keene topless, refused to put shirt on when cop demanded.

Cassidy displayed courage in the face of gender oppression when being arrested for walking around topless to protest indecency laws that affect women in Keene, NH. While the males around her were also topless, they were not detained. Cassidy was able to remain calm and even got the arresting cop to agree that she had some valid points.

Arrested and assaulted for asking questions about hat-wearing in courtrooms.

Charlie tried to attend the public arraignment of Mike Barskey, but before he could even walk into the courtroom, Jesse was confronted and arrested for not removing his hat in the courtroom. Still outside the courtroom, in the lobby, Charlie attempted to ask the bailiffs about the hat-wearing rule: why did it exist? what law allowed such a rule to exist? etc.

Jailed for not sitting within seconds when a judge screamed an order to sit, and for having a couch on his property.

Ian tenants have had a couch on their front lawn for 2 years, but just recently a city government official, the Couch Enforcer, sloppily wrote a ticket for "code violations" and littered it on Ian's property. When Ian didn't respond, a second ticket was issued, doubling the fee to $200.

Ian paid his property taxes in person with $1.00 bills, and made a speech about the gun in the room while the bureaucrats counted the money.

Activist: Ivy Walker
Activism Description Comments Last Updated
Driving without registering her car, and for fighting for her right to travel in the courts.

Ivy Walker drove in New Hampshire for over a year without registering her vehicle or having it inspected, and subsequently turned a trial for such run-of-the-mill charges into a major headache for the State.

1 5/6/09
Acted as legal council for Sam while he's in jail.

While Sam was in jail for recording in a public lobby, Ivy acted as his legal council. She temporarily moved to Keene, leaving her son with her mother and her restaurant with her husband, to care for Sam's house and cat while also aiding Sam.

Burned the UN, US, and NH flags in public.

The idea of burning a flag is well-known and not new, but Jesse's take on it was extra potent. He burned a United Nations flag, a United States flag, and a New Hampshire flag simultaneously. And he did it in public...the day before a national election...on the same street-corner as many US-presidential-candidate-supporting sign-holders.

Refused to remove hat in court.

When Jesse tried to attend the public arraignment of Mike Barskey, he was ordered by the bailiff upon entering the courtroom to remove his hat. He refused and, in a conversation with the judge about it, he stated he had moral reasons for wanting to keep his hat on.

3/2/09
Refused to remove hat in court again, and won!

In the same court and with the same judge that had him arrested about a month previously for not removing his hat, Jesse refused to remove his hat in the court. He presented his constitutional argument to the same bailiffs, who told him he had to remove his hat. Then he told the clerks and they said that the judge demanded Jesse filled out a motion.

3/19/09
Arrested for gardening on public property.

In Jesse's own words: "[T]he Keene City Council passed a… piece of legislation… wherein they gave 5,000 dollars to a group so they can do a 'feasibility' study for a local co-op....5,000 dollars hijacked from citizens and individuals who may never even pick up fruit from this venture, 5,000 dollars stolen from the neighbors of these leeches.

Driving without license and refusing to appear for government's trial for victimless crimes.

2/13/09
Refused to get out of car when cop ordered him to.

A cop pulled Mike over for speeding. The first words spoken were by Mike: "Hi. What did you pull me over for?" The cop then asked (demanded?) that he roll down his window more than 2 inches. Mike refused to comply a couple times, explaining that he could hear her fine.

3 12/31/09
Refused to pay fines set by court.

Despite his innocence of carrying a loaded gun in his car, and despite ample "reasonable doubt" he presented to the judge, the judge found him guilty of 4 of the 6 charges - including the gun charge! (the other 2 charges were null-proc-ed by the prosecutor).

Fought speeding ticket in court.

A cop gave Nick a speeding ticket and Nick fought it. In court, Nick refused to use the court's terminology regarding who he was. The judge wanted to know if he was Nicholas J Ryder, and Nick only said "That is the name on my drivers license" and "That is what people call me." Nick also challenged the story the cop gave, essentially calling the cop a liar.
