While in jail for trying to film at Dave Ridley's arraignment, Sam refused to cooperate at all. If the jailers wanted him to go somewhere, they had to drag or carry him. He would not tell them any information or fill out any paperwork. He even went on a hunger strike. To his charges, the court added "refusing to be processed."
Superintendent Van Wickler called spoke to Sam for about 15 minutes in Ivy's presence, mostly pursuading him to eat. Sam said "You have taken away all of my freedoms and liberties. This is the one freedom I have left; the one thing I still have control over. I am sure at some point you will take that from me as well and medically force nutrition in me, but you will have to do so with force."
