Ian tenants have had a couch on their front lawn for 2 years, but just recently a city government official, the Couch Enforcer, sloppily wrote a ticket for "code violations" and littered it on Ian's property. When Ian didn't respond, a second ticket was issued, doubling the fee to $200. Ian went to the government's first trial and asked questions about where "the city" got its authority over Ian and made a counter-offer to the government, but the judge ordered him to shut up o be arrested, so Ian shut up. Prior to their arraignment, Ian offered to remove the couch if the anonymous complainant would meet with him; she didn't. And Ian At a second trial, before Ian could get a word out - even before Ian could complete the process of sitting down! - the judge had him arrested and sentenced him to 30 days in jail for contempt of court. The judge then held a private trial for Ian (no public were allowed to see or hear it) in which Ian was charged with two more 30-day contempt-of-court charges, so his overall sentence was 93 days (3 days for having a couch on his property). Strangely, even though Ian served the 3 days for the couch, the judge still demanded he pay the fine, too. But instead, Ian offered to donate double the fine to charity and the government people accepted.
