Marijuana protest.

Andrew publicly possessed marijuana, announcing it in advance to the media and the police. He crafted his protest as a win-win situation. He was merely going to be holding a plant in his hand. If the police arrested him, they would be doing so for a blatantly non-violent act, where no person was harmed or killed and no property was damaged or stolen. And if the police did not arrest Andrew, they would display how selectively they enforce their laws, favoring whomever they chose for whatever reasons they chose. Neither of those actions by the police is justice.

Andrew made a fantastic speech to an audience of 40-50 people, including activists as well as non-activists who had heard about it and were interested in participating and/or learning. The police arrived after his speech and calmly arrested him (Andrew willingly and peacefully let them arrest him). Approximately 40 activists followed the cops to the police station, where we remained for about an hour, asking questions that the cops refused to answer. Finally, Andrew was released (in a trick move by the cops: they told us he would be released "in 15 minutes through this door," but he was really released in 5 minutes outside the building - my guess is that the cops tricked us so we could not film them releasing Andrew). Andrew explained that the original charge against him was a "misdemeanor A" but the cops, after talking amongst themselves a while, changed it to a "misdemeanor B" which does not require jail time. Andrew thinks it was because of the presence of 40-50 activists that the cops lessened their charge.
